TransGrid Coffs Harbour Substation Taking Shape
10 February 2006
TransGrid, the New South Wales high voltage electricity network manager, announced that work is progressing on the construction of the new Coffs Harbour 330/132kV Substation. The new Substation is being built adjacent to the existing 132,000 volt substation, which will be integrated into the new substation.
"It may not look like a substation yet, but despite losing some 33 days due to wet weather conditions, work on the construction of the new Coffs Harbour Substation is proceeding on target" said Regional Manager, Mr Kevin Stephenson.
The development is in response to the economic growth of the mid north coast which has seen significant rise in population with consequent residential, commercial and tourist development.
Following the substantial completion of the earthworks and footings, the erection of the 330kV high level structures and associated equipment is underway. Other civil works are nearing completion in preparation for the delivery of transformers and other transmission plant.
The transformers, which were manufactured in Queensland, arrived at the Coffs Harbour site using country roads and avoiding the busy Pacific Highway. They will be installed over the next few weeks and it is expected that installation will be completed by the end of March this year.
Other works, including cable trenches, drainage and oil containment systems are proceeding concurrently with the construction of the 330kV Transmission Line deviation into Coffs Harbour Substation commencing soon. Commissioning works are due to commence early April and will run over a three month period in time for the 2006 winter period.
"The new Coffs Harbour Substation will provide the region with additional capacity to meet current and future needs ensuring the continued development of this important region", Mr Stephenson said.
TransGrid's capital works program, amounting to over $1.1 billion over the next few years across New South Wales, means that people in New South Wales and the economy will continue to reap the benefits of a secure, safe and reliable high voltage grid.
TransGrid aims to minimise impacts and inconvenience on the local community during construction. Should anyone wish to contact TransGrid about this vital work, please contact John McCall on 0249678650.
