TransGrid, the NSW electricity transmission network operator, has successfully delivered the first of two large transformers to the ACT as part of its Williamsdale Substation Project, worth over $50 million.
The new transformer arrived in the early hours of this morning destined for the new Williamsdale Substation site.
“TransGrid’s Williamsdale Substation Project is part of a larger plan to provide a second major point of electricity supply to the ACT. It is a significant investment which will become the future of the region’s electricity supply,” said General Manager of Corporate, Michael Gatt.
The new transformer was transported from Toshiba in Japan and arrived in Australia at Newcastle Port, before being transported to the ACT over the weekend on three prime movers.
Moving the new transformer was part of an impressive logistical exercise, which used prime movers which measured approximately 85 metres in length, weighed around 125 tonnes and was accompanied by three pilot vehicles and two police escorts.
Transformer unloading operations at TransGrid’s substation site took around three to four hours. The second transformer will be delivered during August 2010.
