Network Connection Process

The Network connection process is a formal highly regulated process, defined in the Rules (Chapter 5, clause 5.3).

Connection Applicants are strongly encouraged to contact TransGrid for more information prior the lodging of a Connection Enquiry or an Application to connect.

The Network connection process consists of several stages:

Stage 1: Initial assessment (Connection Enquiry)
Stage 2: Detailed assessment (From an Application to Connect to an Offer to Connect)
Stage 3: Construction
Stage 4: Commissioning

Duration of the Connection Process
The elapsed time to work through these stages varies, depending on the complexity and the maturity of each project. However, as a guide:

  • A simple connection to an existing substation: minimum 18 months
  • A new connection rquiring the construction of a substation: minimum 24 months
  • A new connection requiring the construction of a transmission line: possibly more than 5 years

Connection Investigation Agreement
In response to an "Application to Connect", the detailed scope of the connection investigation is formalised in a Connection Investigation and Negotiation Agreement CINA


Connection Applicant data required with an "Application to Connect"
"Application to Connect" studies are complex and require detailed Connection Applicant data about the proposed connection. This data is provided by the Connection Applicant at the lodgement of an "Application to connect".

Performance Standards to be met by connecting plant


Validity of an Offer to connect
TransGrid's Offer to connect is valid for a period of 3 months.
