TransGrid to Host Safety Day at Newcastle

22 August 2006

TransGrid the New South Wales Manager and Operator of Australia's largest high voltage transmission system will be hosting its eleventh Annual TransGrid Safety Day on 23 August 2006 at Newcastle. Safety Teams from TransGrid locations across New South Wales will be competing for the Perpetual Safety Day Shield.

TransGrid's Safety Day comprises First Aid, Fire Fighting and Risk Assessment competitions providing an opportunity for staff to build on their skills in both team and individual safety scenarios. It also promotes first aid, fire prevention and safety awareness throughout the organisation

TransGrid's commitment to safety is paramount. Our goal is zero injuries, occupational illnesses and incidents. We believe that all incidents are preventable on and off the job.

As part of this commitment employees volunteer to undertake training to provide emergency response and support in the event of accidents and emergencies in the workplace. The skills they develop are invaluable in both the workplace and in the community where employees have often been called upon to render assistance.

"Although we haven't had to call on these skills very often, this training and competition ensures we are prepared when these skills are required" said TransGrid's Managing Director, Mr. Kevin Murray.

Mr. Murray went on to say " TransGrid has an enormous pride in working safely in the Newcastle Region, as in fact it does right across New South Wales. Our Annual Safety Day is an opportunity for our people to put their valuable First Aid, Fire Safety and Risk Assessment skills to the test."

"The learning that comes from events such as this Safety Day develops the skills and increases, not only our people's competence but also our organisation's confidence in getting things right when it matters most - such as in an emergency" Mr. Murray said.

'The pride of representing your Region's workplace is reflected in the way team members respond with each other and this builds teamwork in the workplace which is critical in managing our business" Mr. Murray said.

Bringing teams from across TransGrid together in competition has the added benefit of honing people's skills to perform at their very best.

The event at Newcastle will attract some 200 people from across TransGrid's metropolitan and regional locations providing staff with an opportunity to meet with other staff from across the state. TransGrid former staff are not forgotten either with all ex - Newcastle staff being invited to the event.
