TransGrid Publishes Final Report: Sydney South No 3 and No 4 330/132 kV Transformer Replacements
Sydney South 330/132 kV substation is one of a ring of 330 kV substations that individually provide supply to nearby suburban areas in Sydney and collectively provide supply to the Sydney CBD and surrounding suburbs.
TransGrid is proposing the construction of a new large transmission network asset to increase the transformer capacity at Sydney South. In accordance with clause 5.6.6(h) of the National Electricity Rules a final report has been prepared that applies the AER's regulatory test to a range of reasonable options to meet this requirement.
The proposed actions are that TransGrid will replace the existing 250 MVA transformers No 3 and No 4 at Sydney South by new 375 MVA units. The existing transformers are more than 35 years old and will be retired. Related works include the provision of facilities to connect the new No 4 transformer to the 132 kV busbar in emergencies and 132 kV feeder rearrangements at Sydney South. These works are estimated to cost $16.2 million and they are planned to be completed prior to summer 2009/10.
