Electrical Engineering Traineeship Program

TransGrid's Trainees Engineering Officer program offers Trainees the opportunity to gain valuable and practical work experience in an engineering discipline, and receive financial assistance in the form of a Traineeship, while completing an Advanced Diploma of Electrical Technology at TAFE.

Traineeships awarded by TransGrid also provide Trainees with the opportunity to demonstrate their potential suitability for future engineering related roles within the organisation.

Upon completion of the traineeship, Trainees are eligible to apply for positions vacant within TransGrid or be equipped with skills and experience that enable them to apply for positions, which exist in the broader marketplace.

Program Structure
TransGrid's Traineeship Program is designed to be undertaken over a four (4) year period combining part-time study at TAFE and practical work experience.

Practical work experience, training and development will be undertaken within TransGrid. The Trainee will spend approximately six months in a group or Business Unit before rotating to a different group or Business Unit.

In order to facilitate work experience, training and competency development, TransGrid will provide Trainees with a defined training and development plan to enable the Trainee to acquire skills and competencies identified as necessary for satisfactory performance as an Engineering Officer.

Trainees will work a standard thirty-five (35) hour week [nine (9) day fortnight] with negotiated time off to attend TAFE when in session during semester periods.

Depending on the scheduling of subjects, one day per week or two half days per week (or other such time as deemed necessary and/or appropriate by TransGrid) will be granted to facilitate attendance at TAFE; with the remainder of the working week to be engaged undertaking practical work experience, training and development at any one of TransGrid's Principal Business Offices, although this is currently restricted to Sydney CBD and Wallgrove.

During TAFE semester break/recess and holiday periods, Trainees will be required to successfully complete practical work experience, training and development at any one of TransGrid's Principal Business Offices.

Financial Assistance under the Traineeship Program
The Trainee shall be reimbursed for TAFE course fees and textbooks in accordance with semester subject and module course requirements.
Leave for study and examination purposes will be administered in accordance with the TransGrid's Study Assistance Procedure.

Performance Review
During the Traineeship program, TransGrid will closely monitor and assess the following:

  • The Trainee's academic results
  • His or her personal skills and attributes
  • His or her level of performance demonstrated during periods of practical work experience, training and development in accordance with the Training and Development Plan
  • The Trainee's performance will be assessed at the end of each six-month period/placement, with continued employment subject to satisfactory workplace performance and satisfactory completion of TAFE course requirements


Salary Progression
Trainees will be paid under a salary band range of Salary Point 2 to Salary Point 8 in accordance with the TransGrid Employees Award 2006.

Salary progression throughout this salary band range is dependant upon satisfactory academic performance, demonstrated ability to satisfactorily satisfy and/or complete TAFE course/subject/module requirements, as well as demonstrated satisfactory on the job performance and completion of a successful performance review.

TransGrid's Trainees
