General Guidelines for Transmission Line Easements

An easement is acquired for access and maintenance of transmission lines. Some activities are not permitted within the easement area. This is for both personal safety and the continued safe operation of the line.

Unobstructed access to the transmission line and its structures shall be available at all times for TransGrid plant and personnel.

Activities Not Permitted Within the Easement Area Include:

The construction of houses, buildings or other substantial structures or parts thereof.

Excavation work or other alterations to natural ground levels without prior approval. Approval will not be granted within 15 metres of a transmission line structure.

The installation of fixed plant or equipment.

The storage of flammable liquids or explosives.

The placing of garbage, refuse or fallen timber.

The flying of kites or model aircraft.

Controlled Activities Within the Easement Include:

Parking of vehicles, plant and equipment not exceeding 4.3 metres when fully extended providing adequate safety precautions are taken to protect structures from accidental damage.

Trees and shrubs may be placed within the easement area provided they are types that when fully grown do not exceed 4 metres in height, and do not restrict access to a structure.

It is preferred that minor buildings eg, carports, sheds, detached garages be constructed clear of any easement area however where circumstances do not permit minor encroachments up to a maximum of 3 metres maybe permitted.

Minor structures such as barbeques, clothes hoists, non-metallic fences may be erected within the easement area subject to a height restriction of 2.5 metres and the earthing of metallic parts.

It is important to note that before any work is undertaken within an easement area prior written approval from TransGrid must be obtained.

Where there is any doubt concerning a particular activity within the easement area contact should be made with one of TransGrid?s Regional Centres listed below. Similarly, a regional centre should be contacted for a more specific explanation of easement restrictions and how they may affect the property owner.
