TransGrid Continues to Strengthen Supply in Western New South Wales

27 February 2006

TransGrid the New South Wales Manager and Operator of Australia's largest high voltage transmission system announced today that an important piece of energy infrastructure, the first of two 375MVA Transformers, which will form a major component of the reinforcement of New South Wales Central West electricity supply arrived in Wellington Sunday 26th February 2006, after a long journey through outback Queensland and New South Wales.

The upgrade of Wellington's electricity supply is needed as the township's electricity load is increasing and needs to be reinforced. The current 200 MVA transformers will not be able to meet forecast demand and TransGrid believes it is prudent to ensure continuity of supply by replacing these transformers with higher rated transformers.

TransGrid's General Manager, Transmission Operations, Mr Vic Galea said " these transformers will replace the existing 200 MVA transformers in Wellington that have reached their capacity".

He went on to say "The 375 MVA transformers are of the type TransGrid has been putting in place across New South Wales ensuring the state's high voltage electricity supply will continue to deliver high reliability".

TransGrid's capital works program, amounting to over $1.1billion over the next five years across New South Wales, means that the people of New South Wales and the State's economy will continue to reap the benefits of a secure, safe and reliable high voltage network.
