Safety Competition reaches 50 year milestone

TransGrid, the owner and operator of the New South Wales high voltage transmission network, will today be hosting the energy industry's 50th Annual Safety Day in Yass.

The friendly competition was first held in 1957 when TransGrid was still known as the Electricity Commission of NSW. Although there have been a few name changes in the decades since, safety has remained the number one priority.

Representatives from amongst TransGrid's 950 staff pit their skills and dedication against colleagues in First Aid, Fire Fighting and Risk Assessment competitions. As well as promoting a positive safety culture, staff are given the opportunity to put their skills into action.

"Although we haven't had to call on these skills very often, getting hands-on practical experience is invaluable in the energy industry", TransGrid's Managing Director Kevin Murray said.

Events include teams battling controlled fires and tending to mock injuries while actors pose as victims of various injuries. Representatives from WorkCover and the NSW Fire Brigade will be on hand to judge the events.

"TransGrid has a very strong safety culture, and we actively encourage and support the development of first aid skills throughout the organization", Mr Murray said.

The winning team from each of the First Aid and Fire Fighting competitions will represent TransGrid in the Power Industry Competition held later in the year.

The public are welcome to watch the day's events, and should contact the TransGrid Yass Regional Office
(6226 9666) for details.
