27 April 2006

TransGrid, the New South Wales high voltage electricity network manager, new 330/132kV Substation was officially opened today by the New South Wales Minister for Energy, The Hon Joe Tripodi MP.

The $45 million dollar Substation has been re-built to increase its reliability and reinforce supply to the southern areas of New South Wales. It is now the most modern Substation on TransGrid's extensive network.

Work on the complex project commenced in July 2003 and is one of the largest Substations on the TransGrid network and has utilised innovative engineering solutions with the development of a new 330kV breaker and a half switchyard and a new 132kV single bus switchyard.

TransGrid's Chairman, Mr Philip Higginson said "This state of the art Substation is an integral component of TransGrid's commitment to ensuring the long-term continuity of supply to the New South Wales network".

Mr Kevin Murray, TransGrid's Managing Director said "TransGrid's guiding principle in the design and construction of the new Yass Substation was to ensure security of supply while being environmentally and socially responsible. Environmental considerations were at the forefront of TransGrid's planning and implementation of the new Substation".

He went on to say "The highest standards were applied both during construction and will continue to be applied in the operation and maintenance of the Substation".

TransGrid's capital works program, amounting to $1.1billion over the next few years across New South Wales, means that the people of New South Wales and the State's economy will continue to reap the benefits of a secure, safe and reliable high voltage grid.
