Today, a 330,000 volt transformer is being transported to TransGrid’s substation as a part of a $190 million investment the Western Region over the next 5 years.
The transformer itself weighs around 200 tonnes, and 300 tonnes when in transit.
The transformer is valued at $5 million and has the capacity to supply power to 50,000 homes.
The six prime movers, travelling on 200 wheels and 90 metres in length is a major logistics operation, involving police escorts, and both RTA and council approvals.
This transformer is a part of an $18 million substation upgrade which will ensure the
surrounding regions such as Dubbo, Orange, Wellington and the Western Plains continue to receive a reliable supply of electricity.
TransGrid, the New South Wales electricity transmission network operator, is working productively on its $2.3 billion investment program designed to secure the electricity supply for NSW.
