TransGrid, the New South Wales electricity transmission network operator, will begin civil works this week on its $28.5 million investment into the reconstruction of Queanbeyan's 132kV substation.

“The new substation will incorporate the latest technology to ensure that high voltage electricity supply to Queanbeyan, Canberra, eastern ACT and Braidwood areas will remain secure and meet increasing loads in the region”, said Peter McIntyre, TransGrid's General Manager of Network Development.

“Built in 1957, the Queanbeyan substation has provided reliable power to Queanbeyan and the surrounding community for over 50 years”, said Mr McIntyre.

“This project is the first of a number of major electricity system upgrades planned by TransGrid for the southern tablelands over the next 5 years,” he said.

“The existing substation will be demolished once the new substation is rebuilt on an adjacent site.”

With increasing demand for electricity as the region grows, TransGrid aims to invest early in energy infrastructure.

“This project will ensure the region's needs are met well into the future,” Mr McIntyre said.

The design and construct contract for the new Queanbeyan Substation had been awarded to Downer EDI Engineering Power Pty Ltd and is due to be completed late 2009.
