TransGrid, the NSW electricity transmission network operator, will deliver the first of two new transformers to Orange this week as part of an investment worth more than $50 million to meet growing energy demand in the region.

The new transformer is expected to arrive in Orange during the evening of Sunday 29 November on two prime movers, will weigh approximately 40 tonnes and be accompanied by pilot vehicles and police escorts.

“Upgrades to Orange Substation in William Street commenced in June this year and the delivery the new transformer is a major milestone in the progress of this important project,” said Mr Don Paton, Manager of Projects at TransGrid.

“By June 2010, two new transformers will be installed, effectively increasing the substation’s capacity by more than 25%,” said Mr Paton.

The substation upgrade is part of a larger package of works being conducted by TransGrid to improve the electricity transmission network in the region. TransGrid is also planning to install a new switching station nearby and rearrange transmission lines in the area.

“Orange Substation is a vital part of the Central West’s electricity network, and TransGrid is making important investments over the next four years increase the reliability of electricity supply to the 40,000 people in the Orange, Cabonne and Blayney local government areas,” said Mr Paton.

Transformer unloading operations at TransGrid’s substation site will commence at approximately 7am on Monday 30 November and take around three to four hours. It is expected unloading activities may generate some minor traffic disturbances.

“While every effort will be made to minimise traffic disturbances during the unloading procedures, we encourage pedestrians and motorists to follow the directions of the traffic control manager on site during this short period,” said Mr Paton.

The transformer is being transported from Brisbane and its route into Orange will follow the Mitchell Highway, Northern Distributor Road and Leeds Parade before entering the substation site in William Street.

The second and final transformer is expected be delivered to the Orange site in April 2010.
