TransGrid, the NSW electricity transmission network operator, delivered the second of two new transformers this morning to its Tomago Substation, as part of a $45 million investment to increase the reliability of electricity supply in the region.

The new transformer arrived on several prime movers, weighed approximately 250 tonnes and was accompanied by pilot vehicles and police escorts.

“Works on the Tomago Substation commenced in April last year and the delivery of the second transformer, a key component of the new substation, is a major milestone for this important project,” said Mr Dany Gittani, Project Manager at TransGrid.

“This substation will incorporate the latest technology, equipped with two state-of-the-art transformers, which will boost the reliability of supply reliability to local distribution networks,” said Mr Gittani.

“After its completion, the Tomago Substation will supply enough electricity to supply the equivalent of around half a million average homes in Newcastle and the Lower Mid North Coast region,” he said.

The substation upgrade is part of a package of works being conducted by TransGrid in the area to upgrade the electricity transmission network. TransGrid is also upgrading its existing transmission line network between Tomago and Stroud.

“Tomago Substation is a vital part of the region’s electricity network, and TransGrid is making important investments to support the reliability of electricity supply for customers in these areas,” said Mr Gittani.

Transformer unloading operations at Tomago Substation  were completed in approximately four hours.

The transformer was transported from Killingworth Substation where it was temporarily stored awaiting the completion of preliminary site works.
