TransGrid

TransGrid, the NSW transmission network operator, is preparing to commence works on the final stage of its $9 million pole replacement program in Wagga Wagga.

“Over the past three years TransGrid has made a significant investment in upgrading its transmission line infrastructure between Wagga Wagga and Yanco,” said Bob Rigg, Manager of TransGrid’s Southern Region.

“By replacing wooden poles with concrete ones we are making a long-term investment to increase the longevity and security of the region’s electricity supply infrastructure,” said Mr Rigg.

"By using modern materials we are strengthening the line, resulting in a more reliable power supply for the Riverina,” he said.

In order to complete the works, TransGrid will need to transport, secure and erect the final 17 poles, which each weigh approximately 7 tonnes and are over 22 metres in height.

“We have now replaced nearly 500 poles along the entire length of the line, with only a small amount still to be replaced in Wagga Wagga,” said Mr Rigg.

“The pole replacement program is a combined effort from staff from TransGrid’s Wagga Wagga and Yass regional centres as well as local contractors, to upgrade the security of electricity infrastructure in the area,” he said.

Works will be taking place between 2 March and 20 March 2010 at the following locations:

  • Willans Hill, between Red Hill Road and Leavenworth Drive
  • Talbot Place Reserve, Tatton Estate

Residents should be aware that the walking track will be closed during daylight hours for the duration of the works.

It is expected that limited vegetation management will be required and TransGrid will be working together with Wagga City Council to ensure the delivery of this final stage of the project.

TransGrid’s investment in the Wagga Wagga – Yanco transmission line follows a $23 million investment to build Wagga North Substation, which was completed in July 2009.
