The project forms part of a long-term plan to secure a reliable supply of power in the region, where electricity demand is expected to increase by 35% in the next 10 years.
The upgrade will be carried out by a TransGrid contractor, who is experienced in undertaking transmission line upgrades.
Work will involve the replacement of selected timber pole structures with concrete poles together with landscaping activities to ensure safety clearances are maintained.
TransGrid Project Coordinator Matthew Hayes said the upgrade would commence at Armidale, progressing east along the length of the transmission line towards Coffs Harbour.
“Work is scheduled to be completed by November to avoid periods of peak electricity consumption during summer,” Mr Hayes said.
“If weather conditions are not favourable, work will stop at the end of November and resume during autumn 2011 to ensure a reliable supply to the region during summer.”
“This project is important to increase the reliability of the electricity network supplying the Mid North Coast.”
