TransGrid, the NSW electricity transmission network operator, today announced the
delivery of two large transformers this evening as part of their $51 million Wollar
Substation Project.
The new transformers are expected to arrive on site late this evening, each on three
prime movers. The movers will measure 85 metres in length, will weigh
approximately 125 tonnes and be accompanied by three pilot vehicles and two police escorts.
“The construction of Wollar Substation is part of a works in the region to provide an
additional point of supply to Wellington Substation, which is a major electricity supply point to the Central West,” said Michael Gatt, General Manager of Corporate at TransGrid.
“Once completed, the project will improve the reliability of electricity supply in the
region,” said Mr Gatt.
“Upon completion, the substation and the associated transmission line works
between Wollar and Wellington will potentially have the capacity to provide
TransGrid’s customers in the Central West with around 700 Megawatts of power,
sufficient to supply around half a million average homes,” he said.
The transformers were delivered to Newcastle Port last week and will take
approximately one and a half days to travel to Wollar Substation, at an average of
20km/h, with a top speed of 60km/h.
Transformer unloading operations at TransGrid’s substation site will take around
three to four hours. The third transformer will be delivered mid next week.
