TransGrid

TransGrid, the New South Wales electricity transmission network operator, has announced plans to invest $227 million into the electricity network in Far North NSW, to meet reliability needs and address increasing electricity demand.

“Peak demand for electricity in the region is expected to grow by more than 40 per cent over the next 10 years, which is significantly above the state average,” said Don Paton, Manager of Projects at TransGrid.

“An upgrade to the supply network in the North Coast and Northern Tableland areas is required to maintain a reliable electricity supply well into the future”, said Mr Paton.

To meet this growth, TransGrid is proposing to construct a 215km 330kV electrical link between TransGrid's existing substations at Lismore and Dumaresq (located approximately 80km West of Tenterfield).

TransGrid's plans include the upgrade and replacement of the existing transmission line between Tenterfield and Lismore, while a new 330kV transmission line is proposed between the Dumaresq Substation and Tenterfield.

In the next few weeks, TransGrid will begin detailed field and environmental studies within a 1-2 km study area between Dumaresq and Tenterfield. These studies will assist in determining the positioning of a 60m wide easement, which is necessary for the transmission line.

TransGrid will be contacting landholders involved in the project to discuss the proposal and to seek their input.

The detailed Environmental Impact Statement is scheduled to be publicly exhibited in October 2009.

Construction is expected to commence in August 2010.
