TransGrid's General Manager of Network Performance and Operations, Lionel Smyth, praised TransGrid staff and other members of the energy industry for their response to the events which followed a fault at TransGrid's Bayswater Substation this morning.

“At 10.50am this morning, a fault occurred in equipment at TransGrid's Bayswater Substation in the Hunter Valley, causing all of the generators at Macquarie Generation's Bayswater Power Station to trip”, said Mr Smyth.

“This fault caused a very small fire in the immediate location of the equipment and the fire was extinguished by TransGrid staff before the fire brigade arrived at the scene.

“Staff responded very quickly which limited the extent of potential damage and I can also confirm that no-one was injured as a result of the failure.

“About 100,000 customers in NSW were impacted by the fault, including the Central Coast, Western Sydney and a small number on the South Coast near Wollongong.

“A joint effort from staff in NSW transmission and distribution organisations ensured that power supplies were progressively restored within an hour of the incident occurring”, he said.
