TransGrid, the New South Wales electricity transmission network operator, has energised its new 132,000 volt substation in Queanbeyan.

“All major construction works have been completed and the new substation has now been energised,” said Mr Michael Gatt, General Manager Corporate at TransGrid.

“Over the next few months, TransGrid’s project team will undertake extensive testing of substation equipment, before it is connected to the NSW electricity grid in the coming months,” said Mr Gatt.

TransGrid’s new substation will help secure a reliable supply of electricity to over 50,000 residents and businesses in the Queanbeyan, Canberra, eastern ACT and Braidwood areas into the future.

“TransGrid’s Queanbeyan Redevelopment Project involved the construction of a new 132,000 volt substation, using state-of-the-art equipment, adjacent to the existing
substation,” said Mr Gatt.

“The new substation will replace the original Queanbeyan Substation which was built in 1957,” he said.

“The Queanbeyan project is one of a number of key system upgrades being undertaken by TransGrid to maintain a secure supply of electricity for the region.”

Construction of the new substation at Queanbeyan commenced in December 2008 and it is expected that the substation will be energised and fully operational by summer 2010-11.

“This project is part of TransGrid’s ongoing commitment to reliably power homes and businesses across NSW and the ACT,” said Mr Gatt.
