The ACT Supply Project is TransGrid's biggest investment in the nation's capital to secure another bulk power supply to Canberra.
This project is just one part of a five year, $2.6 billion plan by TransGrid to build new or upgrade existing substations and transmission lines across NSW and the ACT.
TransGrid is committed to its ACT Supply Project which will provide the ACT with a second independent supply of electricity.
What’s involved?
Under the direction of the ACT Government, we are working with ActewAGL to provide the ACT with another bulk electricity supply point.
To do this, we have already constructed a new 330/132kV substation at Williamsdale.
We are currently:
- Undertaking maintenance works on a 50 kilometre section of the existing Canberra-Cooma transmission line between the Canberra Substation and the new Williamsdale Substation;
- Upgrading the Canberra Substation to meet future electricity needs;
- Planning for a new 330kV switching station in the Wallaroo area; and
- Planning for a new short section of transmission line to link the new Wallaroo Switching Station to the existing Canberra- Williamsdale transmission line.
What happens next?
- Mid 2011 - Maintenance crews begin work on the access tracks along the Canberra-Cooma transmission line;
- Late 2011- Construction completed on the new Williamsdale Substation; and
- Early 2012 - Work will begin on the maintenance works on the Canberra-Cooma transmission line.
Our staff have been consulting with landowners and undertaking technical investigations and environmental studies for the various components of the ACT Supply Project.
These investigations will help us determine and manage any potential environmental considerations related to the project.
In order to establish a second power supply to the ACT, a new switching station needs to be constructed. TransGrid has been in discussions with a number of landholder regarding the location of a new switching station in the Wallaroo area. The location of the switching station is still being investigated and TransGrid is continuing to consult with local landholders in 2012.
Looking after the environment
As part of TransGrid’s commitment to the environment, we are working with Greening Australia to revegetate our 20 hectare site surrounding the new Williamsdale substation and transmission line corridors.
ActewAGL is also part of the Greening Australia partnership to remediate its 18 hectare property next to the TransGrid site.
