The project will involve a staged in-situ rebuild of the 330kV and 132kV switchyards and includes replacing some substation equipment, and associated infrastructure improvements.
While the substation has been a stable and strong part of the region's electricity network, some of the equipment is approaching the end of its servicable life, and needs upgrading and replacing.
Work at the substation is expected to commence in July 2016 with completion scheduled for mid-2018.
