Transgrid extends community feedback period for major transmission project

21 July 2023

Following feedback from community and landowners, Transgrid has extended the consultation period about the Draft Corridor Report for the Victoria to NSW Interconnector West project (VNI West).

Project Director Harry Mercer said Transgrid has received numerous requests from members of the community to provide more time to provide feedback on the critical transmission project that will enable greater sharing of energy between the states.

“We welcome the strong interest numerous communities have shown in the project and the time local people have taken to participate in information sessions and public meetings over the last few weeks,” said Mr Mercer.

As a result, Transgrid has extended the feedback period for an additional five weeks, with submissions and feedback welcome until Friday, September 8.

“We acknowledge the concern that has been voiced by many people and the importance of the agricultural production, ecological, cultural and social values of the region,” he said.

“We will continue to work with landholders and communities to ensure Transgrid minimises the impact on these important values.”

The Community Information Days will be held from 10am to 4pm at:

  • Moulamein Bowling Club - August 1-3
  • Deniliquin RSL Club - August 4
  • Wanganella Hall - August 15
  • Conargo Hall - August 16
  • Deniliquin RSL - August 31
  • Wanganella Hall - September 1

Additional sessions are being planned at Moulamein and will be published soon at https://www.transgrid.com.au/projects-innovation/vni-west.

The Draft Corridor Report evaluates a number of potential corridor options and identifies a preferred corridor option which runs from Transgrid’s Dinawan substation, north of Jerilderie in NSW, to new substations proposed near Kerang and the Western Renewals Link in Victoria.

VNI West is being jointly developed with Transmission Company Victoria and will connect major projects EnergyConnect in NSW and Western Renewables Link in Victoria. It is recognised by the Australian Energy Market Operator as a priority project in its 2022 Integrated System Plan which will increase the amount of energy shared between the two states and deliver the best options for electricity customers in the long term.

Feedback can also be provided by sending a submission by email to vniw@transgrid.com.au
