Mentorship spotlight: Joshua Kusumo - From Graduate to Mentor

16 May 2025

When Joshua Kusumo reflects on his early days as a graduate at Transgrid, one thing stands out — the impact of the mentors who guided him.

As a Project Manager at Transgrid, Joshua has stepped into the role of mentor himself, guiding graduate Anthony Klepac as part of the 2025 Graduate Program.

Supporting the Next Generation

Joshua's mentorship journey is fuelled by a strong belief in the value of shared knowledge. Having mentored graduates across different project teams before, he sees mentorship as critical to the future strength of the energy industry.

"The next generation is the backbone of our industry," he says. "By sharing what we know, we can ensure that Transgrid, and the wider sector, continues to thrive."

His approach is about more than just technical skills. Joshua believes mentorship should focus on critical thinking, decision-making, and personal growth.

Hands-On Learning on a Major Project

Joshua and Anthony are currently collaborating on the Waratah Super Battery Class B project, an initiative aimed at delivering vital energy infrastructure safely, on time, and within budget.

Working within the transmission lines space, they manage everything from risk analyses and commercial reviews to project registers and technical documentation. By assigning Anthony ownership of “mini projects,” Joshua ensures that real-world learning and autonomy are built into the day-to-day work.

"I want Anthony to take the lead where he can — to think critically, to assess risks, and to start building that confidence early."

Key Skills for a Changing Industry

When asked what skills are most vital for new graduates, Joshua highlighted three key skills: time management, task prioritisation, and resilience.

“In today’s energy industry, the landscape is always changing. Being able to adapt, to juggle priorities, and to stay resilient through challenges is essential.”

Through deliberate hands-on experience and decision-making opportunities, Joshua helps Anthony — and other graduates — build these essential skills from the ground up.

A Shared Journey of Growth

Mentorship, Joshua believes, is not a one-way street. It’s a partnership of mutual learning.

Beyond individual development, Joshua hopes to contribute to a broader culture of safety, collaboration, and leadership within Transgrid.

"It’s about building a stronger, safer, more future-ready industry — and that starts with investing in people."
