Electrical Substation Technician

Keep the grid reliable by working inside high-voltage substations.

As an Apprentice Substation Technician, you will focus on maintaining and operating high-voltage substations, ensuring the safe and reliable transmission of electricity across the network. This role offers exposure to electrical systems, testing, maintenance, and troubleshooting, with a strong emphasis on safety practices in a high-risk work environment.

You will be working towards completing a Certificate III in Electrotechnology – Electrician, and participating in Transgrid’s Substation Development Program, where you’ll develop specialised technical capabilities to become a future Substation Technician.

Transmission Lines Technician

Work at heights maintaining the grid that powers Australia.

As an Apprentice Transmission Line Technician, you will be working on high-voltage transmission lines, contributing to their construction, maintenance, and repair. This is a hands-on role that involves working at heights, in various weather conditions, and with high-risk equipment.

You’ll play a crucial role in maintaining the backbone of Australia’s energy grid while developing skills in troubleshooting, diagnostics, and line maintenance.

You will be working towards completing a Certificate III in ESI – Transmission Overhead, where you’ll develop specialised technical capabilities to become a future Transmission Lines Technician. 

Controls & Communications Technician

Work with cutting-edge systems that control and monitor the grid.

As an Apprentice Controls and Communications Technician at Transgrid, you will gain hands-on experience working with advanced communication systems and control technologies essential for the safe and efficient operation of Australia’s electricity network.

This role involves installing, maintaining, and troubleshooting communication and control equipment, including SCADA systems, telemetry, and remote-control systems used for monitoring and managing high-voltage transmission infrastructure.

You will be working towards completing a Certificate III in Electronics and Communications, where you’ll develop specialised technical capabilities to become a future Communications and Controls Technician.

Who we’re looking for

You don’t need to know everything — just bring curiosity, teamwork, and care. We’ll teach the rest.

To be eligible, you’ll need to:

  • Have completed high school (minimum Year 10), with strong mathematics and communication skills

  • Be an Australian or New Zealand citizen, permanent resident, or hold a valid permanent visa

  • Hold a current driver’s licence, or be willing to obtain one as soon as possible

  • Be willing to travel and work away from home at different NSW locations as needed

  • Be physically able and willing to work at heights and in outdoor conditions

  • Demonstrate key qualities:

How to apply

Step 1: Submit application

When applying, you will need to submit an up-to-date resume and provide details of your work experience, qualifications and referees.

Step 2: Online selection test

Once applications have closed if you have progressed to the next stage of the recruitment process, you will be emailed an invitation to complete online selection test that can be done in your own time. This test measures your ability relating to the advertised role within the electrical industry as a technical.  All results will remain confidential to Transgrid.

Step 3: Interview and practical assessment

You will receive an email informing of whether you will progress to the next stage. This will involve:

  1. A 30-minute online numeracy skills test
  2. A 30-minute panel interview
  3. A 30-minute practical assessment

Step 4: Pre-employment checks

You will be informed of the outcome of your interview via email or phone. If you are successful you will be subject to Transgrid’s pre-employment assessments, which will include reference checks, criminal history record check, medical check, qualification checks etc.

Note: Not all candidates that go through Stage 4: Pre-employment Assessments will be offered a position.

Step 5: Offer of employment

Upon successful completion of all assessments, you may be contacted to confirm a place in the Apprenticeship Program.

This offer will be formalised with an appointment letter and new starter information package.
