Ten Year 11 students and two Year 12 students from Kooringal, Mount Austin, Wagga Wagga, and Tumbarumba High Schools have been awarded scholarships of $15,000 each to cover essential educational expenses including technology, textbooks, tutoring, stationary, transport, and post-school education costs.
Transgrid HumeLink Program Director Jeremy Roberts said: “Transgrid and our HumeLink West delivery partners UGL and CPB Contractors are proud to support these promising young women with essential resources to help unlock their academic potential and set them on a path toward successful futures.
“The ‘She Can Too’ scholarships aim to empower young women to excel academically and achieve their full potential, supporting regional development by retaining local talent, and preparing students for further education and future careers.
“The initiative is focused on encouraging interest in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) or related fields while supporting scholarship recipients to build on their academic performance and application to learning.
“HumeLink is committed to providing social and economic benefits to local communities and this is another great example of how the project is helping to leave a lasting and meaningful social legacy.”
Scholarship recipient Sarah Wiggins from Kooringal High School said she was excited about the opportunities the scholarship would help her pursue.
“I applied for the scholarship because I’ve always had a strong interest in technology and engineering,” she said.
“Being awarded the scholarship was both exciting and inspiring – especially seeing the amazing achievements of the other recipients. It’s given me a real sense of optimism and hope for the future.
“I’ve already been able to purchase some much-needed stationery and school supplies, and I’m planning to save the rest to help with transport and rent when I start university.
“It’s pretty cool knowing that people building big projects are also supporting students like me – it makes me feel like I’m part of something bigger.”
Scholarship recipient Berivan Yousif from Mount Austin High School said receiving the scholarship was an unforgettable moment.
“Walking into the ceremony and seeing my name and picture on the board was such an incredible feeling,” she said.
“I applied for the scholarship to support my education, and I’m hoping to study a Bachelor of Nursing at Charles Sturt University next year. The funding will help me cover some of those costs.
“I want to say a huge thank you to Transgrid and to HumeLink West for this incredible opportunity helping young people in our community follow their dreams.”
HumeLink West Project Director Tim Burns said: “It’s incredibly rewarding to see these scholarships making a tangible difference in the lives of local students, opening doors to further education and diverse career opportunities.”
HumeLink is providing social and economic benefits to regional communities, including jobs, support for local businesses, education and training opportunities, community grants and partnerships.
The project will create up to construction 1,600 jobs and drive $6.3 billion of direct and indirect investment into the regional economy.
