Communities in Broken Hill and across Far West NSW are being supplied power by the reconstructed transmission line after specialist crews safely energised the new permanent section of the transmission line south of Broken Hill on the weekend.

The new 3.5km section, comprising eight steel pole structures, has been connected to the existing transmission line, completing permanent reconstruction works following the extreme weather event in October 2024.
The region’s power supply was temporarily serviced by two large-scale back-up generators, allowing more than 30 personnel to safely cut-in the new section to the existing transmission line.
Head of Transgrid’s Far West Operations Response Sam Pickering said: “I would like to recognise the outstanding efforts of our specialist crews and teams who worked over two nights with tight deadlines to safely energise the new section of line.
“I am pleased that the reconstruction of the transmission line is now complete, with the primary power supply for the Far West restored to its permanent configuration following the extreme weather event in October.
“I would also like to acknowledge the efforts of our teams at Broken Hill substation who closely monitored the two large-scale back-up generators and ensured their optimum performance to power communities in the region without interruption during the works.”
Transgrid recently completed extensive refurbishment of one of the large generators, enabling it to be brought back to service ahead of robust testing to ensure their performance during the works.
“To the communities of Broken Hill and Far West NSW, we would like to thank you for your patience and understanding while we completed these essential works.”
Transgrid will now dismantle the seven temporary structures erected last year and demobilise the construction site, with the operation fully completed by mid-year.
“We are also continuing to monitor and maintain the 260km transmission line from Buronga to Broken Hill while working with key stakeholders to develop longer-term solutions to provide safe, reliable and affordable energy to Far West NSW,” Mr Pickering said.
