The announcement builds on recent cooperation between the federal and state governments, to plan for the energy system of the future.
TransGrid CEO Paul Italiano says: “Today’s announcement complements the NSW Government’s Transmission Infrastructure Strategy and AEMO’s Integrated Systems Plan, which both underscore the need to accelerate investment in new transmission lines and interconnectors between states to increase supply and alleviate congestion.”
“The Energy Security Target is a positive step forward to ensure there is enough generation capacity for NSW to handle heatwave conditions, even with the two largest generating units offline,” says Mr Italiano.
TransGrid also welcomes the government’s commitment to proceed with a pilot 3,000 MW Renewable Energy Zone (REZ) in the State’s Central West and looks forward to working with the government to make it a reality.
“Recent history demonstrates the need to coordinate the transition to new renewable technologies. Renewable Energy Zones are the logical next step,” says Mr Italiano.
TransGrid is the jurisdictional planner and manager for transmission in NSW and the ACT.
