Washington State delegation visits Transgrid during Australian trade mission

07 November 2023

An official delegation from Washington State has visited Transgrid to learn more about the NSW high-voltage transmission provider’s crucial role in Australia’s clean energy future.

Washington State representatives from business, education, and government are staging a trade mission to Australia, focusing on government diplomacy and business partnerships to support clean energy development and the phaseout of fossil fuels.

The 28-member delegation visited Transgrid’s Sydney headquarters and was taken on a behind the scenes tour of our CBD substation before a briefing about the NSW network.

Transgrid Executive General Manager Network Marie Jordan said: “We were delighted to host the Washington State delegation to showcase Transgrid’s crucial role in enabling Australia’s clean energy future.

“Our network across NSW and the ACT stretches more than 13,000km – greater than the distance from Sydney to Seattle. It allows energy trading between Australia’s three eastern states and powers more than three million homes and businesses.

“There is no transition without transmission and Transgrid is delivering the priority transmission projects identified by the Federal and NSW governments to realise their renewable energy vision.

“Over the next decade, we plan to invest $16.5 billion to ensure we can operate the NSW transmission system at 100% instantaneous renewables and enable our clean energy future.

“Washington State has also made major advances in transitioning to 100% clean electricity. I thank the delegation for their interest in Transgrid and our program of works to bring Australians cheaper, cleaner energy and make our renewable energy transition possible,” she said.

A key focus area of the trade mission is exploring decarbonisation and clean technology.

Washington State Governor Jay Inslee said: “Washington State, NSW, and all of Australia have a common challenge to build out the grid transmission necessary to decarbonise our electricity.

“It’s exciting to learn about the regional and national strategies being implemented in Australia towards transmission upgrades as my state also pursues an all-clean electric grid by 2045,” he said.
