How a leap of faith proved a winning decision for a female apprentice

06 June 2025

Casey Wilson’s journey into the electrical trade wasn’t exactly planned, but it turned out to be one of the best decisions she ever made. Read how she started in the trade as a Transgrid apprentice, why she took a leap of faith, and what she’s learned so far.

A surprise opportunity that sparked a career

Casey Wilson was working in a regular job when a customer overheard her say that she was interested in an electrical apprenticeship. “He connected me with someone at Transgrid, and after learning about the pre-apprenticeship program, I thought, why not give it a go?”

Casey applied, got in, and never looked back.

Real commitment, real growth

At the time, she was living on the Central Coast and had to drive to Orange for the five-week pre-apprenticeship course – all while juggling work.

“It was definitely a challenge. But pushing through helped me realise how much I love this field. After the program, I applied for a full apprenticeship and even moved to Orange when I got the job.”

Her biggest lesson? If you’re willing to put in the effort, you’ll create opportunities.

Why an apprenticeship is a solid career choice

If you’re worried that you’re too youngor even too old – to start an apprenticeship, don’t be.

“I started at 28 and thought I’d be too old, but I wasn’t,” says Casey. As long as you’re ready to learn and can see how the work fits into your lifestyle, go for it. It’s never too early or too late to get hands-on and future ready.”

A job in electrical trades will always be needed, she says. The industry is changing fast, especially with the clean energy shift, and there’s so much demand. If you want a solid career with real future potential, this is it.

So, what makes Transgrid different to other workplaces

“Honestly? The people. From day one, the team in Orange has been amazing. I’ve learned so much from experienced fitters who have taken the time to explain everything – even when I asked a million questions.

What’s next? More learning. More growth.

“Right now, I just want to become a qualified tradie and spend a few years getting experience on the tools. After that, who knows? As long as I keep learning, the sky’s the limit at Transgrid.”

Whether you’re finishing Year 10 or thinking ahead after school, Transgrid’s Apprenticeship Program is your chance to build real skills, earn from day one, and be part of something bigger – like powering Australia’s clean energy future.
