Camps to welcome workers as HumeLink construction to get underway

01 September 2025

Four purpose-built worker accommodation facilities set to become a home away from home for hundreds of construction personnel will open shortly for the nation-critical HumeLink project.

Major construction works for the 365km transmission line to connect Wagga Wagga, Bannaby and Maragle is expected to begin within weeks Transgrid and its delivery partners are rounding out construction of worker accommodation camps at Yass, Adjungbilly, Tarcutta and Kunama that will house up to 1,200 workers.

HumeLink Project Director Jeremy Roberts said: “Providing a home for our workforce is one of the first steps in constructing this nation-critical project, which will provide access to cleaner and more affordable energy to households and businesses locally and across NSW.

“These camps bring more people into local communities to support local shops and businesses while minimising impacts on short-term accommodation in nearby towns for tourists, the rental market and housing affordability."

“They also reduce worker travel to construction sites, minimising road and traffic impacts, and provide quality living amenities so personnel are safe and comfortable while living and working away from home.”

The self-sufficient camps provide quality facilities including air-conditioned bedrooms with ensuites and televisions, gyms, full kitchens and dining rooms, recreation rooms, medical rooms, Wi-Fi (provided by delivery partners) and offices.

The Adjungbilly camp, located 22km east of Gundagai, will accommodate 190 personnel, and will be the first to open to workers in early September.

The Yass worker accommodation facility, located in the Yass Industrial Park, will provide 300 beds and start welcoming personnel in September.

The Tarcutta facility, located 1km to the west of the township, is nearing completion and will be ready for worker occupation from September, with 350 beds.

Civil works at the 350-bed Kunama camp, located 10km from Batlow, are nearly finished with prefabricated modular buildings to be delivered in September. 1 September 2025 Official Personnel currently working on the HumeLink West project have been using temporary accommodation at the Rex Airlines Pilot Academy at Wagga Wagga Airport.

The delivery of HumeLink will involve the construction of a 365km-route in two sections, HumeLink East and HumeLink West, and includes new 500 kV transmission lines and new or upgraded infrastructure at four substation locations.

Transgrid’s delivery partners for the project are UGL and CPB Contractors for the western part of the alignment between Maragale and Wagga Wagga and Acciona and GenusPlus Group for the eastern end between Bannaby and Wondalga.

HumeLink is expected to create up to 1,600 construction jobs and drive $6.3 billion of direct and indirect investment into the regional economy including supply opportunities for local businesses, education and training, and community funding and partnerships.
