Community consultation continues on HumeLink planning

01 February 2024

Landowners and community members are being encouraged to attend a series of information sessions to receive an update on the planning and environmental approvals process for the nation-critical HumeLink transmission project.

Transgrid has incorporated feedback on the Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) from local communities, landowners, stakeholders and Government agencies and is developing a Submissions Report to be lodged with the NSW Government mid-year.

The 365km overhead transmission line will connect Wagga Wagga, Bannaby and Maragle and is a vital link in the National Electricity Market. The essential infrastructure will reinforce and support the critical southern network of NSW and Victoria and connect cheaper renewable energy sources to the grid.

Transgrid Project Director Jeremy Roberts said: “We encourage landowners and community members to drop in for the HumeLink community information sessions and street meetings being held across the project footprint throughout February.

“It’s a great opportunity to learn more about the project and the changes being proposed as a result of community, landowner and stakeholder feedback following public exhibition of the HumeLink Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) last year.

“Transgrid has proposed project refinements and amendments in response to feedback received from ongoing consultation, particularly from easement-affected landowners.

“One significant change resulting from landowner feedback is the diversion of the route from Batlow to Green Hills State Forest.

“In addition, we are now proposing to increase the number of worker accommodation camps - from one to five - to remove any impacts on local housing availability. Transgrid will continue to engage with landowners and local communities to minimise impacts and provide opportunities for local content.”

In total, 158 submissions were received on the EIS and additional design refinements will be included in an Amendment Report.

Both the Amendment Report and Submissions Report will be submitted to the Department of Planning, Housing and Infrastructure (formerly Department of Planning and Environment) and will be publicly available on the NSW Major Projects Planning Portal.

If you are interested in learning more about HumeLink or the Reports, the project team will be hosting a series of community information sessions, street meetings and online events in February and March. All events are being advertised in local newspapers (print and online) and on Facebook.
