Empowering local communities during the construction of nation critical HumeLink

16 September 2025

Local residents can now play a central role during delivery of the nation-critical HumeLink project as members of specialist reference groups.

Interested community members can now nominate to be part of the HumeLink Construction Reference Groups during works for the 365km transmission line, which will deliver more affordable and cleaner power to households and businesses between Wagga Wagga, Bannaby and Maragle.

The HumeLink Construction Reference Groups will provide a forum for early notification of upcoming works and for the community to give feedback and guidance as construction proceeds.

Transgrid General Manager of Community and Social Licence Michael Johnson said: “The successful delivery of this once-in-a-generation investment in Australia’s clean energy future relies on real and meaningful community consultation and involvement.

“Transgrid and our delivery partners are committed to furthering our close engagement with the local community to learn from their valuable insights and feedback as main construction work for HumeLink gets underway in coming months, ensuring disruptions from a project of this scale are kept to a minimum.

“A nation-building project of this scale can only be delivered with the support and input of the communities accommodating the infrastructure—and will be better for that involvement.

“We want to deliver HumeLink in a way that leaves a lasting, positive legacy across the region and that’s why we are continuing to work closely with local communities to help us further address any impacts.

"I encourage interested members of the community to come forward and nominate to be part of the HumeLink Construction Reference Groups by 28 September 2025.

“Transgrid and our delivery partners look forward to working with community representatives, stakeholder groups and local councils on matters relating to construction of the project as part of the HumeLink Construction Reference Groups.”

The project is expected to create 1,600 construction jobs and deliver $6.3 billion of direct and indirect investment into the regional economy.

Transgrid and project delivery partners Acciona/GenusPlus (HumeLink East) and UGL/CPB Contractors (HumeLink West) are seeking six community representatives for Construction Reference Groups for the Yass, Upper Lachlan, Cootamundra-Gundagai, Wagga Wagga and Snowy Valleys LGAs.
