How a mid-career change helped this apprentice find her passion for renewable energy

Find out how Annette Erickson left her job as a UX designer behind and took up an electrical trade after joining Transgrid’s pre-apprentice and apprenticeship programs.

From office work to the electrical trade

For most of her career, Annette worked in an office as a UX designer in the tech industry, but she felt drawn to a more hands-on role. That’s what led her to apply for Transgrid’s pre-apprenticeship program at age 31.

"I want to learn how to use all sorts of hand tools and power tools. I like the idea of being able to cultivate a diverse, practical skill set that I get to use and develop regularly. I also wanted to learn more about the industry and what a full apprenticeship would involve,” she says. “The program helped me realise that this was the right career change for me.”

Overcoming challenges as a new apprentice

Starting fresh in a new industry came with its challenges. For Annette, the biggest hurdle was overcoming imposter syndrome.

“I had never worked in a job like this before, and I didn’t have much experience with most tools,” she admits. “The only way to get past that was to put myself out there and give it a go.”

Fortunately, the supportive environment at Transgrid made all the difference. “As an apprentice, everyone knows you’re still learning, she says.

Advice for women considering an apprenticeship

Annette reflects on how trade careers weren’t widely promoted when she graduated from her all-girls high school over a decade ago. But times have changed.

“It’s never too late to start an apprenticeship,” she says. “You might be surprised at how much your previous work and life experience will help you.”

For women considering a trade career, Annette encourages them to take the leap. “There’s so much to gain from stepping into a hands-on role, and the industry is always looking for fresh talent.”

Theperks of a career in the electricity industry

One of the things Annette loves most about her job is the variety. “You’ll never be bored,” she says. “There’s always something new to learn and so many different niches to explore.”

Beyond that, she finds meaning in the work itself. “It’s interesting, challenging, and hands-on. Plus, you’re doing something that benefits your community.”

What makes transgrid a great place to work

Now 32, Annette says the best part of her apprenticeship isn’t just the hands-on experience — it’s the people.

“There are so many things to enjoy about this role, but the people at Transgrid have been incredibly friendly and helpful,” she says. “I’m constantly learning and trying new things, and that’s really fulfilling.”

Looking back at her journey

Annette speaks highly of Transgrid’s pre-apprenticeship program, praising its teachers and the foundational knowledge it provided.

“It taught me the basics of electrical theory and gave me a real taste of the industry,” she says. “It even helped me land an apprenticeship with Transgrid.”

Looking ahead: A future in energy

Annette is keeping an open mind about her long-term career path.

“There are so many interesting and important roles in this industry,” she explains. “My apprenticeship will give me the chance to explore different pathways and see where I want to go.”

With the energy sector evolving rapidly, Annette is excited to be part of the shift toward renewable energy.

“There’s so much happening as the grid transitions to support renewable energy,” she says. “I hope to play a role in building a clean, reliable energy grid for the community – both now and in the future.”
