Transgrid is proposing to install a steel lattice radio repeater pole (approximately 95 metres in height) at the Sunnydale property located along the Silver City Highway, south of Broken Hill, NSW.

Key elements of the proposed activity include:

  • Installation of a steel lattice telecommunications structure up to 95 metres in height
  • Guyed wires to support the structure extending up to 100 metres outwards from the centre point of the structure
  • Two Yagi antennas installed on the radio repeater tower

The proposed activity is needed to improve the strength and reliability of electricity supply to the area through efficient communication to the Broken Hill substation.

There is an obligation under the Electricity Supply Act 1995 for electricity suppliers such as Transgrid to provide appropriate maintenance of electricity facilities and to facilitate rapid and efficient response to any emergencies. Control and protection of these assets is remotely managed, with data communication necessary for the safe and efficient operation of the network. This is predominantly provided by a telecommunication network comprising microwave radio and optical ground wire based assets.

A Review of Environmental Factors (REF) was prepared under Part 5 of the Environmental Planning and Assessment Act 1979. This was made available for public and stakeholder comment from 20 March to 17 April, 2019.

We have now determined the project and anticipate construction will commence in late 2021.
