$200,000 in funding on offer for community groups in Far West NSW

08 April 2025

Community groups and not-for-profit organisations are being invited to apply for much-needed funding to help accelerate local projects and initiatives under Transgrid’s Far West NSW Community Partnerships Program.

The grants are part of Transgrid’s commitment to provide $500,000 for community organisations in areas impacted by the power outage following the extreme weather event in October 2024.

Executive General Manager of Stakeholder, Regulatory and Corporate Affairs, Maryanne Graham said: “The events of last October underscored the resilience of Far West communities and our responsibility to continue to support them.

“Not-for-profit organisations are the lifeblood of the region, and we’re excited to launch the second round of funding with grants of up to $10,000 to support even more community initiatives.

“The outstanding response and quality of applications in our previous round reinforced just how vital these groups are to the Far West, and we were delighted to provide 44 community organisations with a total of $300,000 in grants to support their important work.

“Through this second round of funding, we are not only investing in community projects but also affirming our dedication to strengthening the bonds that hold these communities together.

“I strongly encourage community groups across the Far West to apply for funding for projects, events, programs, equipment and facility upgrades.” "

Landcare Broken Hill is using its round one grant for their Greening the Hill Mk.2 initiative, purchasing a portable generator to ensure safety, resilience, and continued progress with volunteer community projects. At Imperial Lakes Nature Park, until a larger-scale solar and battery system is established, purchasing a second generator to power heavier works will maintain project momentum.

“Access to reliable power is vital for our volunteer workforce and our community projects. This grant enables us to safely power our operations focussed on re-greening the environment, whilst continuing to create our stunning Nature Park” Hon. President Simon Molesworth said.

“We sincerely thank Transgrid for the contribution, which is making a significant impact on our ability to foster environmental resilience and community well-being.”

Fellow round one grant recipient West Broken Hill Rifle Club is using the funding to install solar panels.

“With Broken Hill’s eight to nine hours of sunlight each day, our new solar panel installation will be a game changer for us. It will enable us to shift to clean energy, reduce costs, and secure our long-term sustainability,” Club Captain Don Merritt said.

“We are extremely grateful to Transgrid for their generous support, which is helping us build a greener, more resilient future for our club and community.”

The $500,000 Community Partnerships Program is in addition to the $1.5 million contribution to the NSW Government’s community support package for residents and businesses affected by the power outage in Far West NSW following the extreme weather event last year.

Applications close on 23 May 2025. For more information on eligibility and how to apply for grants under the Community Partnerships Program, visit: https://www.transgrid.com.au/community/broken-hill-and-far-west-nsw-community-partnerships-program/
