Buronga Radio Repeater Site

TransGrid is proposing to construct a steel or concrete radio repeater pole, (approximately 45 metres in height) at the existing Buronga substation, located on Arumpo Road, Buronga, NSW.

  • The Project

TransGrid is proposing to construct a steel or concrete radio repeater pole, (approximately 45 metres in height) at the existing Buronga substation, located on Arumpo Road, Buronga, NSW. Once installed, communications equipment including two dishes approximately 1.8 metres in diameter and one Yagi antenna around 2 metres in length would be attached to the pole.Buronga locality map.jpgFigure 1: Locality Map

  • Why is TransGrid Undertaking the Work?

The project is needed to improve the strength and reliability of electricity supply in the far south-west region of NSW. Specifically, this requires a robust communications connection between Red Cliffs, Buronga and Broken Hill substations.

There is an obligation under the Electrical Supply Act 1995 for electricity network operators such as TransGrid to provide appropriate maintenance of electricity facilities and to respond efficiently to emergencies. The installation of the radio repeater pole would assist in meeting these requirements through the increased ability to monitor and protect transmission assets in the region.
  • Planning Approval and Environmental Assessment

TransGrid prepared a Review of Environmental Factors (REF) under Part 5 of the Environmental Planning and Assessment Act 1979, which was made available for public and stakeholder comment from 18 August, 2017 to 18 September, 2017.

TransGrid has now determined the project. The REF, Submissions Report and Decision Statement can be viewed via the links below.
TransGrid anticipates construction works will commence in November/December 2017 and conclude in January 2018.
