New interconnector may be better than new coal plant, says TransGrid boss

​NSW electricity transmission company TransGrid said an expanded interconnector between NSW and Queensland would be cheaper than building new generation to replace AGL Energy's Liddell coal-fired power plant, due to close in 2022.

The Turnbull government still pushing AGL to keep the old Liddell plant open to avoid a potential shortfall in power generation capacity in the National Electricity Market early next decade.

But TransGrid chief executive Paul Italiano said an expanded interconnector to the northern state – with the potential to move another 500 megawatts across the border – would cost $700 million.
