About HumeLink West
HumeLink will deliver a more reliable and more sustainable grid, create more than 1600 jobs and generate major benefits for local communities along the route.
Transgrid has contracted UGL Engineering Pty Ltd and CPB Contractors Pty Ltd (UGL-CPB JV) to deliver the western portion of the HumeLink project.
HumeLink West involves the expansion of the existing Wagga Wagga 330 kV substation, the design and construction of a new substation at Gugaa and connection works to the future Maragle 500 kV substation. The project also includes a new 500 kV double circuit transmission line to connect the substations at the Wondalga interface point with HumeLink East.

HumeLink West project update
Main construction is now underway following government approval on 26 September. Main construction involves building transmission towers and stringing transmission lines across the 140km HumeLink West alignment, building the Maragle and Gugaa 500 kV substations, and upgrading the Wagga Wagga 330 kV substation.
Some enabling works – which started in early 2025 – will continue, including access point establishment, access tracks and completion of the Kunama accommodation facility.
The first transmission tower to be constructed on the HumeLink West section of the project will be located at Gregadoo, east of Wagga Wagga. Transmission tower construction through to the end of the 2025 will progress from Wagga Wagga towards the south of Tarcutta, before progressing east to Ellerslie and Greenhills.
As construction activity increases, there will be more project vehicles traveling along local roads and near construction sites. Stay informed about current traffic conditions – visit Live Traffic NSW for real-time updates on road closures, delays and conditions. To learn more about vehicle movement across the project alignment, view the HumeLink West Vehicle Movement Plan.

The HumeLink Community Investment and Benefits Program is designed to ensure local communities share in the positive outcomes of the project through targeted funding and support.
Shortlisted projects were showcased at community drop-in sessions across the alignment and community members were invited to provide feedback to assist in the prioritisation of projects within their local areas. A panel from Transgrid and its delivery partners are now assessing the shortlisted initiatives, with award to successful projects expected in November.
Construction Reference Groups (CRGs) ensure local voices are heard and community concerns are addressed by providing a forum for ongoing discussion between Transgrid, our delivery partners and the community as the project progresses.
