About HumeLink West
HumeLink will deliver a more reliable and more sustainable grid, create more than 1600 jobs and generate major benefits for local communities along the route.
Transgrid has contracted UGL Engineering Pty Ltd and CPB Contractors Pty Ltd (UGL-CPB JV) to deliver the western portion of the HumeLink project.
HumeLink West involves the expansion of the existing Wagga Wagga 330 kV substation, the design and construction of a new substation at Gugaa and connection works to the future Maragle 500 kV substation. The project also includes a new 500 kV double circuit transmission line to connect the substations at the Wondalga interface point with HumeLink East.

HumeLink West project update
Main construction continues to progress along the HumeLink West alignment, with teams moving from tower assembly and erection into active line stringing. Main construction involves building transmission towers and stringing transmission lines across the 140km HumeLink West alignment, building the Maragle and Gugaa 500 kV substations, and upgrading the Wagga Wagga 330 kV substation.
Line stringing operations are currently underway. In June 2026, the first conductors were successfully strung along a 2.3km km section of the alignment that interfaces with Wagga Wagga Substation at Gregadoo. Conductor installation is carried out using aerial stringing methods, with drones and helicopters used to safely install the pilot cable and conductors. Stringing activities will continue from Gregadoo towards Ellerslie and Green Hills, before progressing through Bago State Forest and on to Maragle in the Snowy Valleys.
The first HumeLink West transmission tower was erected in October 2025 at Gregadoo, east of Wagga Wagga. Since then, more than 20% of the transmission towers needed for HumeLink West have been erected. Tower assembly and erection crews are currently building around five to ten towers each week, with construction expected to continue to ramp up as more workers join the project. As construction activity increases, there will be more project vehicles traveling along local roads and near construction sites. What's happening in the community
We continue to host community information sessions and participate in local events across the HumeLink West project area to share updates and connect with the community. Work notifications
Main construction continues to progress and involves building transmission towers and stringing transmission lines across the 140km HumeLink West alignment, building the Maragle and Gugaa 500 kV substations, and upgrading the Wagga Wagga 330 kV substation.
Current and ongoing construction activities include:
- Line stringing operations - use of drones, helicopters and specialised tensioning equipment to guide and install conductors between towers.
- Excavating with piling rigs and excavators for the tower foundations
- Concrete works for the tower bases, including reinforcement and concrete pours
- Assembling and lifting the towers using cranes
- Access and site establishment
- Vegetation clearing, excavation and earthwork
- Ongoing construction and maintenance of access tracks and points, along with operation of temporary site compounds and accommodation facilities.
- Installing amenities, fencing, signage, barriers and other controls
- Equipment and other deliveries to work sites with heavy and light vehicles
- Survey, investigation and monitoring, including drone and aerial photography
The work is undertaken by HumeLink West Joint Venture (UGL Engineering and CPB contractors), in line with the relevant guidelines and approvals.
Work will take place during standard construction hours of 7am to 6pm Monday to Friday and 8am-1pm on Saturdays. If out of hours work is required, we will contact all impacted landholders and near neighbours seven days before work starts.

The project requires a variety of products and services, and all packages may not be listed on ICN. If you’re interested in registering your business for potential opportunities as the project progresses, please submit an expression of interest to the Humelink local business register.
